How a chiropractor treats back pain

Can Chiropractors help Back Pain?

There are a few different chiropractic methods to treat your pain. Some are short and easy, while others require a few visits to take place before the treatment is finished. Back pain is very common and it is important to assess your options with your chiropractor before choosing which treatment to go with. Chiropractic techniques have been proven to be effective in reducing back pain, among other areas.

How can a Spinal Adjustment help with Back Pain?

Spinal adjustment and manipulation are the most common forms of chiropractic methods. The reason for this is that by stimulating the bodies self-healing abilities, realignment of the spine helps to reduce pressure on the central nervous system. This often aids with the easing of back pain. The first visit to your chiropractor is similar to a doctor’s visit, since the first step of each is always to state your symptoms. This is crucial, as the doctor can’t necessarily see all the symptoms you have, even with an X-ray. Your chiropractor may order tests to be done or X-rays to be taken. This is done so they may fully understand your condition and ensure that they do not overlook details.

How long will it take to stop my Back Pain?

First, a treatment plan is created, with your input. As mentioned before, this may take a few visits to the chiropractor. With every visit you make, your chiropractor will pressure certain parts of your body. These parts are key parts of your back or your neck etc and will help realign your spine and help you manage your back pain. Massage therapy may also be a part of your treatment. For a full list of treatments, it is recommended to speak with your chiropractor. If you’re experiencing back pain, unusual headaches, neck pain or any other unusual pains, you should book an appointment with your chiropractor.

Who are Chiropractors?

Chiropractors are experts in their field. They receive many years of training at specialistic, accredited institutions. They are trained in both theoretical and practical training. Chiropractors also participate in residencies in order to specialize in a certain area, for example, back pain. Chiropractors go to school for longer than most medical doctors and very passionate in their field of work. Mainly, chiropractors seek to reduce pain and improve the performance of patients in addition to educating them on how they can account for their own health through methods such as exercise and other therapies to treat back pain.

The negative effects of smartphones on our spines

The negative effects of smartphones on our spines

Smartphones are becoming increasingly more popular. Millions of Americans rely on their smartphones to do all manner of tasks for them. 64% of Americans now have a smartphone. Although they make some parts of our lives much easier, they also have some negative effects. For example, smartphones cause problems to our necks and often cause neck pain. The main problem is that most people hold their phones in front of their bodies and not in front of their faces when they’re using them. Standing hunched over your phone means that your neck is not in an ergonomically sound position and repeated long-term use of a phone like this is likely to induce neck pain.

Looking down at your smartphone exerts a large amount of pressure onto your neck. A lot of people are hunched over their phones for long periods during the day and this can lead to degenerative issues.

Prevention of Neck Pain

There are a few ways in which we can prevent this from happening to us. Be aware of your posture. If you want to avoid neck pain you should simply align your phone with the front of your face. This may attract some odd looks however it’s definitely preferable to having neck pain! Take a look up from your phone every few minutes to ensure it’s not in the same position for too long. Give your neck and back some time to relax and relieve the pressure from your neck. Another way to reduce neck pain is to practice stretching. If you enjoy watching sports you’ll know that players always warm-up before a game. Likewise,  if your body parts are loose, then you’re less likely to create a crick in your neck. Roll your shoulders and stretch your neck. This should prevent you getting any back pain.

Finally, if the neck pain is too severe and you’re a frequent mobile phone user you should consider making an appointment with a professional chiropractor. At the meeting, you should definitely mention that you’re on your phone a lot and you have a sneaking suspicion that the two may be linked. You may only require a few simple treatments to ensure full and proper use of your neck again. Neck pain from the overuse of phones is often treated with a simple adjustment or re- alignment.

Chiropractic Care may lower blood pressure

Why is regular Chiropractic Care Important?

A study on middle-aged African Americans from researchers at Sherman College of Chiropractic found evidence that regular chiropractic care reduced their blood pressure. Prior to these findings, research observed decreased blood pressure in patients after chiropractic adjustments on patients with anxiety or cervical spine dysfunction.

About blood pressure

Patients in the study received one year of chiropractic care for various spinal conditions, and their blood pressure was measured 3 times throughout the course of the study. Patients with a BMI lower than 50, had diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number, which is also the lower of the two numbers, measures the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats – when the heart muscle is resting between beats and refilling with blood) significantly decreased over the course of treatment. Patients with a BMI higher than 50 (considered severely obese), did not experience the same drops in blood pressure. This leads researchers to suggest that obese patients may be “more resistant” to blood pressure reductions when it came to chiropractic care.

The takeaway from the study is that chiropractic care can be more efficient in lowering blood pressure if those receiving treatment make an effort to maintain healthy weight levels. Maximize the effect adjustments have on your body by adopting an active lifestyle and cutting back on unhealthy foods.

Does our generation have the worst posture?

girl-1064658_640Can being on technology ruin your posture?

Written by: Jyoti Patel, B.A. Microbiology, M.S. Nutrition

In the information age, it’s not unusual to spend 10 or 12 hours behind a computer. The effect of the posture we have when craning our necks forward (even slightly) and hunching over can compound as we repeat the same routine over and over.

Every time we check our phones, we bend our neck down and keep it in the same position which can strain our muscles and cause headaches and neck pain. Out body’s structure slowly changes and adapts to this, resulting in misalignment and pain. While we all may tend to make these mistakes without realizing it, there are solutions we can take to address the complications.

Sitting in that position causes the chest muscles to tighten and the muscles of the upper back to weaken and loosen, can cause the shoulders to rotate forward.

The solution is to stretch to relax tight chest muscles. First, place your arm against the wall on the side of a doorway in a high-five position, with your elbow bent 90 degrees. Take a step through the doorway and feel the stretch in your chest and the front of your shoulders. Hold this position for 30 seconds and do 3 sets, four times a day.

Exercise to strengthen the trapezius, the main muscle of the back. Lie on the floor, face-down, and place both arms at a 90 degree angle in a high-five position. Maintaining the same angle at the elbow, lift both arms by dragging your shoulders backwards and pressing the shoulder blades towards each other. Hold this position for five seconds. Repeat 3 sets, four times a day.

The techniques described above won’t solve posture problems from the root; rather they are methods to manage pain that should be coupled with regular adjustments from your chiropractor.

Regular adjustments restore the natural curvature of the spine and reverses what the stressors of everyday life do to your posture and body.

What’s the secret to weight loss?

What’s the secret to weight loss?Weight loss begins here

Almost everyone is sick and tired of the constant bombardment of advertisements on TV. Also, we’ve had enough of the internet using every trick they can to fool people into thinking there’s some magical solution to weight loss. Unfortunately, there is no “weird old tip” that can help you cut down 3 lbs of your week.  However, there is normal old tip for losing those extra pounds that we all know but try to ignore. We must ensure caloric intake is less than caloric expenditure.

We’ve all heard of fads like the South Beach diet, the Zone diet, the Atkins diet. They allow an all-you-can-eat breakfasts of scrambled eggs and bacon and expensive programs like Nutrisystem. And we’ve also heard that 95% of diets fail. But why? Why is our friend who lost 10 lbs in a week and happily shared their results on Facebook doomed to gain it all back?

t’s because our body experiences dieting as a stressor, triggering production of high-levels of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline that cause our body to slow down the rate at which we burn calories. Our body is intentionally slowing down our weight loss efforts, because it believes our rapid weight loss caused by our lower caloric intake is a threat to survival.

Any dietician or nutritionist in the right mind will teach that what we eat is important, but changing the type of food we consume alone doesn’t necessarily create long lasting change, because that doesn’t affect our deep rooted beliefs and behaviors that inform our food choices and eating habits in the first place.

Change your mindset

The following thoughts should never  re-occur in your daily life:

  • “I’ll never be happy until I’m skinny.”
  • “I hate my body.”
  • “I don’t have enough willpower, and just need more discipline to fix my issues.”
  • “Food is my enemy – it’s a constant struggle.”

Remember, ensure caloric intake is less than caloric expenditure. It’s really that simple.

Chiropractic + Checkpoint Inhibitors beat Cancer

dscf2322-copyOftentimes, stressful conditions can lead to transformed measures of immune function & amplified vulnerability to a diversity of diseases such as cancer. Stress hormones, along with subluxation tend to hinder the immune system, and the Sympathetic nervous system is enacted, mobilizing your body’s energy in stressful situations.

Our immune system is the most important part of our body when it comes to protecting us against harmful bacteria and viruses. Not only is it necessary to maintain a strong immune system to fight off contagious illnesses like the cold and the flu, our immune system plays a vital role in preventing life-threatening conditions such as strokes and cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, there is one infamous disease that our body cannot fight off alone – cancer.

This is why scientists are constantly researching ways to help the immune system recognize cancerous cells which often go undetected by our own immune systems. So far, we have developed treatments called “checkpoint inhibitors.”

These drugs prevent cancer cells from looking invisible, almost pointing them out to our immune system and saying “attack!” These medications have shown promise in trials, allowing patients to avoid traditional chemotherapy, which can have serious and debilitating side effects, including a weakened immune system.

Let’s take things down to a cellular level. Immune system T cells patrol our bodies constantly on the search for signs of infection or disease. When they encounter other cells, they check for certain proteins on the surface that serve as signs of the cell’s identity. If the proteins indicate the cell is healthy, the T cell leaves it alone, but if the proteins indicate infection or cancer, the T cells attack! The immune system summons additional molecules to prevent any collateral damage.

Tumor cells often have proteins that signal that cells are cancerous. But they sometimes commit “identity theft” masking themselves in normal cell proteins. This way they can prevent an immune system attack. Checkpoint inhibitors block these normal proteins on cancer cells, essentially removing the blinders that prevented T cells from recognizing the cells as cancerous.

If these checkpoint inhibitors are the future of cancer treatment, then more focus will shift towards the immune system. An effective way to keep the immune system healthy (in addition to getting proper minerals, vitamins and sleep) is regular chiropractic adjustments. As vertebrae that are misaligned are put back into place, this relieves pressure on nerves, allowing blood and nutrients to flow freely, in turn, boosting the immune system. Many cancer patients visit chiropractors in order to protect themselves from contagious or common illness. In the future, the visits may serve to treat the cancer itself.

Higher mobility

One of the most popular treatments in sports medicine, is Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). This treatment aims to provide athletes with greater flexibility and pain-free movement. Surprisingly, Football players often rely on OMT to prevent injuries during the season. A study by Virginia Tech in 2012 showed the positive impact on performance in both offensive and defensive Virginia Tech football players after OMT.

Keeps baseball players on their feet

Baseball is undoubtedly a physically demanding game that requires quick bursts of energy to run to the bases or swing the bat. Unfortunately, rotator cuff injuries, back strains, hamstring pulls and neck pain are all too common as a result of these activities. Several studies have demonstrated that chiropractic prevents hamstring and other  injuries in baseball players. Muscle strength and long jump distance was greatly improved in those  who regularly received chiropractic adjustments.

 Relief for Hernias

Between 5 – 20%of sports injuries involve groin pain most commonly caused by “sports hernias.” A 2012 study showed that soccer players with sports hernias were relieved of pain following 8 weeks of chiropractic care and rehabilitation.

Olympians are proud patients of chiropractors

Michael Phelps took home 5 golds and 1 silver medals for the US in the past year’s summer Olympics. He is among hundreds of top athletes that are proud patients of chiropractors. Just some of the examples include Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Evander Holyfield, Tiger Woods, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. For decades, chiropractors have worked with Olympic athletes to improve their strength, recovery time, endurance, and range of motion during training. Also, athletes receive chiropractic care at the games to keep their competitive edge.

 Relieves Tennis elbow fast

Tennis elbow is no stranger to  tennis players as 50% of tennis players can expect to get tennis elbow during their lifetime, and about 33% will experience severe tennis elbow. The same motion repeated over and over again for hours isn’t easy on the elbow! Specific joint manipulation therapy used by chiropractors to treat this condition aims to relieve pain and promote healing. Then, you can get back to swinging hard and not worry about recurrent injury.

Increases physical strength

Clinics in Sports Medicine have shown that athletic chiropractic is effective against musculoskeletal issues. Also, it can promote physical strength. This is useful in martial arts, gymnastics and almost every sport. A study researched national-level judo athletes and discovered 16% increase in grip strength after undergoing only 3 chiropractic sessions. If you would like to see similar results in your athletic performance, visit your local chiropractor today.

Helpful for Hockey Injuries

Ice hockey is a full-contact sport like football and sever injuries are common. Regular chiropractic adjustments relieve the painful symptoms of recurrent shoulder instability.

4 Most Common Injuries after a Car Accident

slide04Got an accident injury?

Although cars are getting safer every year, serious injuries  from car accidents seem to be getting worse. If you’ve recently been in a car accident or are feeling the toll it took on your body months (or even years) ago, you know that a car isn’t the only thing damaged. Let’s take a look at the 4 most common forms of accident injury that occurs after a car accident and how you can reverse them.

Head collisions

As drivers and passengers in a car are seated when they’re involved in high-speed accidents, the force after a collision is enough to cause brain trauma. Depending on the severity of a crash, people may have concussions, go into comas or experience cognitive issues.  It’s best to never risk your mental health and meet with a doctor to fix problems now that you won’t be able to resolve later down the road.

Back & Spinal trauma

The spinal cord is the most important part of your body and a large portion of it is located in the back. When damage to the spinal cord occurs, people experience reduced sensation and less control over their body parts like the arms, legs, hands and feet. Furthermore, a more severe car accident injury could be paralysis. If our nerves are unable to carry through the signal to and  from the brain, we simply can’t move.

On the less severe end of the spectrum are herniated disks, where the soft “jelly” in the center of your spinal disks oozes out through a crack and suppresses a nerve. You might not feel any symptoms, but they may appear months or years later as your body ages. Herniated disks can cause numb or tingling sensations, arm and leg pain, and weak soft-tissue muscles. Did you know your spine is so sensitive, even a sneeze or cough can herniate a disk? Your chiropractor can help move spinal disks back into their proper positions with the help of regular adjustments.

There’s a high chance your head or neck were abruptly jerked in one direction, if you have been rear-ended. Whiplash is very common in almost any type of car accidents and can cause long-lasting neck muscle and ligament damage. Swelling of the neck, difficulty swallowing, having trouble speaking and general neck pain is also common.

Your chiropractor will feel for tender and tight areas as well as how your spinal joints move. He will also analyze how you walk (your gait), and take notes on your spinal alignment and posture. If icing is necessary to reduce swelling, a chiropractor will recommend holding an ice pack to your neck before using gentle manipulation techniques to restore normal movement to your neck.

 Chest injury

Blunt force trauma from car accidents can potentially break ribs and cause collapsed lungs. If you have a history of heart problems, an accident can trigger traumatic cardiac arrest.

However, it’s likely that the chest area pain won’t stop there; over time, the chest area can be an immediate problem following an accident. Damage to internal organs, the pelvis, and the abdomen can also occur. Once a lack of blood flow through obstructed coronary arteries has been ruled out as your chest pain’s cause, consider making an appointment with a chiropractor as your chest muscles, ribs, lungs and heart are directly and indirectly controlled by spinal nerves. Misalignments in your spine caused by a car accident can suppress or overstimulate these nerves resulting in chest pain.

Schedule an appointment with a doctor who will analyze your situation. Then, they will cater a treatment plan to help restore movement to affected areas. Be wary of the side-effects of pain-killers you’re taking.  They only serve to temporarily mask the pain, not solve the issue from the source. To solve the issue, you have to correct your spinal disk positions and ensure they aren’t suppressing nerves. This way, your body can send the signals to begin repairing affected muscle tissue and bone.

5 fastest ways to reduce back pain

shutterstock_105949631Tips to reduce back pain!

Painful back pain can affect your day-to-day activities, so instead of getting addicted to opioid painkillers, let’s nip this problem in the bud!

1) Lighten your load
First, get rid of the extra cards. Then, switch to a smaller purse or wallet and all the “just in case” items. Stick to the bare essentials. Heavy bags on one shoulder while walking will twist your spine to one side. If you absolutely can’t make any sacrifices to free up space, switch the shoulder your bag’s strap rests on every 20 minutes.

2) Broccoli, Kale and Spinach
You can eat your way to having a  healthy back! Make sure you’re eating brightly colored fruits and veggies. This will reduce spinal cartilage inflammation. Prevent stiffness from the inside out! Avoid certain foods. For example, processed foods like most packaged snacks, fast foods, and saturated fats FUEL inflammation.

3) Correct your posture
Get adjusted! First, Let’s break down what happens during a chiropractic adjustment. The doctor will apply light pressure to move your bones into place. The muscles, ligaments, and tendons will be corrected into the proper structure. Nerve signals to properly pass through and blood circulation to increase so the body can do what it does best – naturally heal and repair injured areas.

4) Put your abs to work!
One of the most commonly reported pains across the world is lower back pain.   All the strain is focused on the back when we forget to lift with our knees or bend down to pick something up. Strengthening your core will help even the weight of the load across your body. You’ll be knocking out two bird with one stone as belly fat is a common cause of extra strain on your back muscles! Be careful when doing crunches as the improper form put pressure on your lumbar region, worsening your back pain.

5) Put pillows in the right places
Sleeping can be a nightmare if you suffer back pain. Most importantly, know that sleeping can either heal your pain or make it worse.  Positioning is everything when it comes to sleep. First, pick the right position and you’ll enjoy relief from the constant straining during the day. Lay on your side. Put a pillow between your knees so you’re maintaining neutral spinal alignment. If you prefer to sleep on your back, placing a pillow under your knees will reduce stress on your lower back and hips. This will also prevent unequal tension across your spine.

Is whole wheat really better than white bread?

Is whole wheat really better than white bread? There has been much discussion about what “versions” of basic food staples are healthiest for the body. We eat grains everyday and should definitely make sure we’re ingesting food that our body can use to extract nutrients and fiber it needs. So which type of bread is better for your health?

Consuming white bread regularly means less fiber to allow smooth passage through the digestive system; this may result in sticky bits of food in the colon.

So what’s the difference between whole wheat and white bread that seems to make all the difference?

It’s the way the grain is processed. The flour for both is made from wheat berries, which have three parts: the outer shell (bran), inner area (the germ) and the starchy substance between (endosperm). Whole wheat is processed to include all three nutrient-rich parts, but white flour uses only the carbohydrate-packed endosperm. White bread misses the fiber from the bran and the vitamins E and B6, magnesium, zinc, folic acid and chromium which are packed into the embryo, or germ, of the wheat berries.
Out of all the nutrients mentioned above, fiber is the clear MVP as it aids in digestive health and its effects on helping you lose weight because eating fiber-dense wheat bread helps you feel full.

But that’s not all!

In a 10-year Harvard study, people who ate high-fiber breads had fewer heart attacks and strokes than those whose tastes ran to bagels and baguettes. And according to a 2003 study from the University of Washington published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, simply switching from white to whole wheat bread can lower heart disease risk by 20%.
